Cancer in Balance

  • Cancer needs to find balance of power, a challenge she shares with her opposite, Capricorn. But while, Capricorn strives to gain power over those in the wider world, Cancer does so within the family unit.
  • It’s not that Cancer can’t stand on her own; she can. It’s more that once she makes a deep emotional connection, she struggles to let go. This is because for her, familiarity breeds not contempt but security.
  • One of the best ways to manage this is to build relationships based on mutual trust.

When you trust another person, you can be open and honest with them in your thoughts and actions. They can reciprocate. When you honestly value the feelings and beliefs of another, it’s more likely that they will value yours in return.

This means that you’ll need to take responsibility for what you say and do as well as to keep promises and not violate confidences.  A major cause of friction between family members is failing to meet agreed upon commitments in the agreed upon manner.

To keep them close, don’t give them reason to walk away.

The mythology surrounding Cancer shows how, in practice, this works:

Although Achilles’ mother dips him into magical waters to make him immortal, the heel where she holds him remains vulnerable. Thus fearing the prophecy that Achilles will die young, his mother keeps him safe by her side. Unable to cut the apron strings, Achilles sits sulking until his best friend is killed in the Trojan War. With this emotional loss, Achilles finds the courage to leave home and dies a hero’s death avenging his friend.

Tight bonds with friends and family are important to Cancer, but at some point, she needs to let go and trust.
